I can't think of a single airlines frequent flyer programme, nor a singe airline alliance who have a frequent flyer programme level that gets you upgrades on partners.

Upgrades (without paying for them) are something utterly at the discreation of the operating airline.

In terms of BA status for US domestic travel it will get you lounge access when flying AA domestically, which is something AAs own members don't get.

Should i better off trying for status on domestic airlines like Alaska or Delta? I will have quite number of trips coming up in the next few months.
If free upgrades are what you are after, on US flights, then personally I'd look at US programmes.

2) what is BA's typical year? I did few few trips in Dec 2011 on BA, those are still counting towards status. but i understand it usually between jan 1st and dec 31st. is it not right with BA?
It is personal to each member, depending upon when in the year they start. But it is always the '8th' of the Month.

You will need to establish your own personal year end date from logging into the BAEC section of BA.com
