I don't know about cardboard packaging but I have traveled on more than one occasion with cans of soda in my luggage and have yet to have one explode or burst open [or leak in any manner] though I always package them in plastic to contain any potential spill.

I would think that a bigger worry would be inspections and the possibility of the product "growing legs".
