I use Ear Planes and they help a lot. I put them in for the ascent and descent. I also take Pseudoephedrine an hour or two before the flight. My Father used to have ear pressure so bad he couldn't hear for a week after flying. He quit flying decades ago because of the pressure. I have found I have to use every trip, trick and tool can find to manage it. Allergy season makes it worse and I can't forget my Ear Planes or I have severe ear pain.
