Given that the iPhone platform wins on luxury (offering a premium product for a premium price) and the Android platform wins on price and openness, the best that MS can hope for is to displace RIM as the distant #3 player in the consumer market..
There are still a lot of consumers who don't know anything about the OS - they will buy what the sales rep recommends AND whatever is the cheapest. Even though they have upwards of $80/month available for a subscription, a lot of people still hate paying anything more than $0 for their phone. With the Lumia 900 already popping up for "free", plenty of people will just go for that.
