If people can't afford to shop anywhere better then Tesco I am sympathetic, but those that choose their crappy quality produce over Waitrose just for the miles are crackers. FWIW I have a reasonably good insight into the standards of most UK retailers...and I wouldn't consider buying fresh meat/veg/fish from anywhere cheaper than M&S. Waitrose is half a notch above, my local shops another half notch. Sainsburys Taste the Difference if marooned in the provinces. Of course, I am lucky to have the means to do so.
In a current affairs lesson at school many years ago the question of class came up and we discussed shopping choices as part of this. One bloke asked the teacher where they did their shopping and he said Safeway because they had enough money not to have to shop at the local branch of Normans (a Westcountry chain a step or two up from the likes of Aldi) which sold the same branded goods as Safeway, but cheaper.
So one of my classmates asks why they don't just shop at the Normans as it's the cheapest? Sir said because they didn't have to, and that it could be said that there was a class distinction between the people who shopped at Safeway and those that shopped Normans. They liked to thing they were better off than those that had to shop at Normans and how did this fit with what my mate thought about class? "Dumb" comes the reply he says obviously if they're the same products and they're cheaper at Normans you just buy them there.... leaves more money to spend in the pub.
