Agreed, except one of the variables is stuff breaking down.

I'm not saying that UA's maintenance on its 747's is beyond reproach, but if something breaks down unexpectedly, which is presumably what happened in this case, obviously they need to fix it, and sometimes that take a while.

Better to arrive three hours late in one piece, than on time at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, no?

I do agree these delays are frustrating, but I always try to keep it in perspective. After all, you traveled halfway around the world, a journey that just a hundred years ago would have been a harrowing weeks-long epic.
