BA CW trip report (no pics)
I apologise for the lack of photos but until I've learned how to put them on this forum, this is a written report only, I do hope it's not too dull!
This was a solo flight for me for a visit back from PEK to visit my daughters in the UK and my first solo flight in around 20 years , so I was a little nervous.
Flight: BA038 PEK-LHR on 29/3/12 - Seat 63A
I checked in online at T24 but collected my boarding pass at the bag drop at PEK airport. The agent on the desk was friendly and spoke excellent English.
Had a coffee at Lei Cafe with the hubby then went through around 9am for my flight, which was due to leave at 11.15am. Incidentally, his boss was also on my flight but seated downstairs & we bumped into each other in the immigration queue. We met again on our way to the CA Business Class lounge so sat together whilst waiting to board.
Boarding was annouced at around 10.45 so we walked together to gate A11, which is very close to the AC Business Class lounge.
On showing the CC my boarding pass, I was welcomed by name and directed to go through the CW cabin then up 'the silver stairs', nice touch I thought.
Went to the UD, my seat mate was already seated, so I stored my stuff in the overhead and the side bins and got settled. I was offered the choice of drinks & chose a glass of bubbly. I got a copy of 'Hello' and the Daily Mail and enjoyed my drink.
Take off was a few minutes late, no problem, got menus & amenity kit and perused the choice of films & tv programmes. After take-off I chose to have a Kir Royale, which went down nicely.
I did pinch a menu:
Lunch
Smoked Salmon
or
salad of bell peppers & mushrooms
Salad
Fresh seasonal salad served with vinaigrette
Main
Rack of lamb in rosemary jus with pan-fried polenta cake, ratatouille & spinach
Grilled breast of chicken with lemon parsley butter, fennel & capsicum, spinach & mashed potatoes
Brailed bailing mushroom in black bean & chilli sauce with sauteed kai-lan & stir fried vegetable rice
Chilled main course Nicoise salad with prawn
dessert
Chocoloate & orange mousse with berry compote
Aged cheddar & Brie with garnish
I chose the smoked salmon with the roast chicken breast and finished with cheese.
The salmon portion was a good size & very tasty, there was a lovely dressing, sort of a tartare but not quite so sharp and the salad was fresh and tasty, I cleared both plates.
The chicken was a little dry but the mash was very good, not lumpy and the lemon parsley butter complemented both.
The chedder was a bit hard and I didn't finish it all.
I enjoyed a glass of Chablis with my lunch and fell asleep before my tray had been taken away - I had got up at 6am that morning so was pretty tired by this point.
When I woke up around an hour or so later, my tray had been taken and my table had been stowed. I tried to get back to sleep, the cabin lights had been dimmed and it seemed most people were asleep or working. The UD was full but very quiet.
As I couldn't get back to sleep, I decided to read and have another glass of the Chablis, so went to the galley area but there wasn't a member of crew about so I went downstairs and got a drink from there.
I read for a very long time, had a couple more glasses of Chablis and a couple of bottles of water, then around 90 minutes before landing at LHR, a light meal was served.
Starters
Roast beef salad with Caesar dressing
or
grilled field mushrooms with roasted tomato, courgette and artichoke with baked ricotta
Main
Beef in mushroom sauce with roasted potato, seared fennel & sauteed spinach
or
Beijing style braised prawns with sweet chilli coriander sauce
or
Vegetable lasagne with cherry tomato & basil sauce
Dessert
Passion fruit tart with citrus salsa
I had the mushroom to start and it was the strangest mushroom I've ever eaten. It was flat, like a slice of something, I wouldn't have guessed it was a mushroom if I hadn't seen it described as such - not overly enjoyable.
I wanted the prawns but unfortunately, there was none left so I declined the other choices. The passion fruit tart was on the tray with the mushroom but it wasn't overly pleasant; the pastry base was hard and it was just dry, it could have done with a jus or something to soften it a bit. The salsa was a slice of orange segment and a couple of pink grapefruit segments.
We landed around 15 minutes early, which was nice, the Captain was very informative about the weather, which was just lovely.
Overall, it was an enjoyable flight, the light meal was a bit of a let down in terms of my first choice not being available, for me or my seat mate. The service was decent, I was addressed by name by one or two members of CC but not all, so a bit inconsistent. I chatted to the cc who had worked the UD as we waited to leave the aircraft, they were pleasant & friendly.
Again, my apologies for a bit of a dull TR.
