Turning a Stand-by into a Mileage Run

Several weeks ago, I purchased a low o/w fare from MIA to LGA (one-stop via CLT-Charlotte) knowing that I would not be able to make the early-A.M. flight and intending to stand-by for a later non-stop, a freebie offered to Elites.

As I approach my departure date, the afternoon and evening flights are almost all full. I will probably not have a problem getting on one of them but I also see that there is an afternoon flight from MIA to ORD connecting to LGA. Both flights have a number of open seats.

AA already told me that I can stand-by for the non-stops and that they will not oblige me to fly MIA-CLT-LGA but will they permit me stand-by for MIA-ORD-LGA (not only assuring me arrival in NYC but also letting me score more miles)?

Thanks.
