Just upgrade to business and your problem is solved. UA usually loads a ton of R/RN space a few days before the flight.
She had exit row before the change over. She's Gold for life now, so I think that gives her exit.
She might do a business upgrade, although in her view they should comp it since they screwed up. She spent about 6 or 7 hours on the phone that weekend trying to get it fixed.
