If your connection allows, your bags will be tagged to your final destination even on two separate tickets. Even though you will be required to collect your bags in your first port of arrival into the USA, you will then simply need to drop your bags at a bag drop usually located right after customs where no one will check your actual allowance for the domestic flight as your bags will have already been tagged.
