Without a chip you cannot buy a train ticket from AMS to the city unless you have coins for the machine or want to wait in a long ticket line. The machines only take cards with the chip. There are a few other airports with the same problems when trying to buy a ticket across europe as well.
Same with trying to buy Tube passes in London (at any Tube station including LHR)... you have to see an agent to use a non-chip card. The kiosks won't work. I always leave some extra money on my Oyster card when I leave town so I don't have to wait in the long line to see an agent at LHR.
