Actually, I don't think these people were trying to be rude; rather, they were confused because you were, unintentionally, misusing the terms. Most of us work in industries where there are specific terms that the general public confuse, and it can cause misunderstanding among those who regularly use the terms specifically.

As someone who didn't previously understand the difference between the terms, I learned something on this thread.
