I'm not sure why the latter statement I highlighted just because of the former. You're having this possible issue on one trip, and as a result of this one trip you want to completely change what's in your wallet?

First of all, in case you haven't noticed, any time you buy a ticket at aa.com, they give you the option of purchasing trip insurance right then and there! I used that when I was flying to areas possibly impacted by the Iceland or Chile volcanos, but not on other trips. Then for the non-flying parts, I just made sure that all my hotel reservations were made with cancellation times reasonable enough that if the whole trip was cancelled, I'd still have time to cancel most if not all of them. Same for ground transport. If you're worried about a hurricane (or anything else), don't use advance purchase rates at hotels! Without advance purchase rates, changing hotel reservations within a few days of travel (by that time you should know hurricane likely or not) should be without penalty.

So I'm not sure what else you need cancellation coverage on other than the airline ticket. And that's easy to get at aa.com (and it covers disurptions as well as cancellations) if you buy the ticket, and as already explained, probably not even necessary if it's an award ticket.
