Not commenting on award availability using miles at all, but it sounds like you may be an infrequent *A flyer, soooo.....

If it is still available, Aegean might be up your alley. Depending on your trip you could get Star Alliance Gold or Silver out of it. Or add a one or two extra *A flights within a year and make it to Gold.

Gold gives you lounge access... 20,000 status miles for Aegean Miles & Bonus Gold status, which is Star Alliance Gold (4,000 for Blue status which is Star Alliance Silver). And to get *A Gold, according to their web site, you even get a kind of extension... 16,000 miles needed within a year after you reach silver. For an international flyer, lounge access is a good perk even if you don't earn enough miles to get useful tickets (you can always donate them to charity or get magazines, I guess).
