I'm not just trying to maximize the total number of points, but am also trying to shift some of our accumulation to my wife's aeroplan account to bring it up to a level at which we can redeem on an upcoming trip for one of the tickets. I seem to rack up points at about 10x the rate of my wife--we don't share the purchases enough!
20 stays? You'll naturally qualify for Platinum anyways. Is your wife an FPC member? Sign her up, and allot her ten stays (if you travel together) so she becomes Platinum, and charge five nights onto your Platinum card and you become FPC platinum.
The front desk will divide up the charges exactly how you want to pay for it. It will take some time, but it can be done.
If its' your Amex account, you can try transferring part of the balance to your wife's AE account (can be done immediately if you have a balance on your Amex points). Amex doesn't usually check the name, in which the Amex points are being transferred to AE. Perhaps this technique, if it works will get you guys over the hump.
