Some countries/cities you can't mistake you're in a different place every moment of the day. Santiago doesn't give me that vibe at all. I feel very comfortable there.
I can see this. When I'm in Santiago, I tend to feel like I'm in a Spanish-speaking Denver. I think it's far denser than LA, though (and with a far better transit system!)
BA feels more like a decaying Spain without the history. As much as I enjoy spending time in the city and as lovely as the people are, I never quite understood the adoration that so many people feel for BA.
My favorite city on the continent is actually Montevideo - cultured, relaxed, pleasant, filled with nice people, delicious restaurants, and a long running path along the riverfront... what's not to love?
