The issue doesn't matter; what matters is (a) your status and (b) the level of compensation they're giving out at the time the skykit is redeemed. I would just plug in your info and see what you get. If you feel it's not enough, then follow-up.
Once seated, I asked the FA why they didn't move their best business passengers to first and their best economy passengers to business, making at least 20 people happy about upgrades and creating space to reseat companions together in economy. She said that is what she would have done, but the new "Continental" procedures do not allow it. Strange.
I'm no UA apologist, but under PMUA, you'd never see op-ups
solely to accommodate people sitting together in a given cabin. For overbookings, yes, but not simply to move pax around...which is as it should be. Also, keep in mind how much extra time it would have taken to do this. Even if you could quickly manage the C -> F and Y -> C op-ups, there would be no guarantee that the resulting empty seats in Y would allow separted people to sit together. Just as likely you'd open up a slew of single seats all over E+. The resulting musical chairs might take forever to resolve...
