Does this mean that not only will I not earn points/miles/nights for the stay, but that I will not even get other privileges extended to Gold members (e.g. late check-in, free internet etc)?

When I asked the Marriott agent, he said just show the Gold card at check-in and you should be OK - but he didn't sound very convincing.
