For me it's about 100% reciprocation - Gate agent smiles at me, I smile back and say 'thanks.'

FA says "welcome aboard" I say something nice... Cockpit crew says "Thanks for flying Air Canada" then when I'm deplaning I say "Thanks for the good flight."
