I lived in SCL for about 18 months and had ~2 dozen folks from the states visit with no issues. Do agree with the tap water in town isn't the most tasty but by no means bad. I also had no problems with the water either in pretty remote places such as Putre or smaller cities of Iquique, Punta Arenas, etc. I did have a friend of a friend who had issues in SCL, but she has problems and drinks bottles in Denver as well.
