Doesn't look like there's a lot of Ireland action on this forum. Probably because it gets buried by all the U.K. stuff. Maybe they need to give Ireland its own forum. At the risk of being cliche, who's up for starting an Ireland independence movement from the crown?
But to the subject at hand, I might make just one suggestion: since you are leaning towards skipping the Ring of K. and hitting the Beara Peninsula, I might suggest you set aside a couple of hours driving through the Gap of Dunloe just west of Killarney. That way you'll get a good taste of the area without losing too much time on your way south as it is sort of on your way. No coastline but a lot of wild beauty...



Beautiful drive through a spectacular, wild scape and if you are fortunate enough to get sunshine, you can triple the beauty of the place. Very narrow track though so you'll constantly be looking for the next turnout spot in case a vehicle is coming in the opposite direction. I would say the average tourist heading around the Ring doesn't take this lovely drive and in April I don't think you'll have to worry too much about loads of traffic.

Another little idea: After visiting the Cliffs of Moher, if you don't want to drive back through Limerick on your way down south, a fun idea is to head straight south to Killimer and take the ferry across the Shannon to Tarbert on the County Kerry side of the river. (google "Tarbert Ferry") It's not very expensive and you can get out of your car and go up top and enjoy the refreshing breezes and views and might even see a dolphin. Again, on a nice sunny day, a really enjoyable and unique experience to add to your trip. Unless there are things you want to see in Limerick I would definitely consider this.
