I think the claim would have to be with AA/CX as the bag was left behind by them and never reached KUL to get put on AK. We found out that it ended up on a Malaysian Air flight to actually get to us.
We have squawked about a damaged bag after the fact once with United--the damage wasn't obvious and we didn't notice that anything was wrong until we had unpacked. When we showed them the situation they replaced it.
Since you couldn't squawk at the airport they'll let you do it after the fact if they're being reasonable. I can't guarantee they're being reasonable.
