The only problem I can see is one I encountered on one or two other forums which had this system, and that is where the e-mail sent to you takes so long to arrive - i.e. as much as several hours or more (and requires a response within the next 24 hours or you are blacked for ever unless you change your username) - that you've perhaps already had to leave for another place. If the system generated an e-mail to respond to within a reasonable space of time (say half an hour), then I'd be in favor of it.
