This is ridiculous.
For such situations, I have contacted the partner airline program operator (i.e. US in your firend's situation) whose program didn't post the miles and submit a copy of the ticket receipt showing the class of service booked.

Thanks for the information. When in such situations in the future, I might just credit the flights to a UA account at the gate instead of having to deal with chasing down mileage credit.
