While I'm not sure the possible negative ramifications of this "strategy" I can tell you that my grandparents flew a BA 744 a number of years ago MIA-LHR and were issued UD seats. Upon arrival at MIA they informed the BA staff that my grandfather was unable to climb the stairs. CW was full and they were reseated in F.
That's a nice story !

There are other things to disadvantages getting old...
