If it does come from the same bucket...this is the only proceduere I can think of. Is there a better procedure??
-search for "mileageplus upgrade reward" fare
-if I find one...do a new search for select fare type (M, E, U, H, Q, V, W)
-buy one of these
-wait for it to ticket
-try to apply upgrade, see if there is waitlist only

What I've been doing...search for select fare...buy the ticket...see that everything is waitlisted...swear at UA...cancel the ticket...
