First of all, you are best to go to your brother and ask him specifically about the voucher he has. You know what 'assume' means.
I was "bumped" out of F on a flight less than 2 weeks ago. I was connecting from AS and checked in with AS. AS printed my DL boarding pass SEA-MSP. But when I got to the gate, I was told I wasn't checked in so they gave my seat away (late arrival meant I only got to the gate 20 minutes before departure).
Long story short, I showed them my boarding pass again and said it is impossible to not be checked in but have a boarding pass. Fortunately the person they gave my seat too was also on the connecting flight and also got to the gate shortly after I did. The GA undid all the seat assignments and got me back into my F seat. Fortunately I knew I was right, was polite and patient and it all worked out, even with a short time before departure.
This can be a learning experience - get to the airport early, ask questions, ask for a supervisor, don't take "no" for an answer.
But without more specific info, any of us are just guessing.
