On the way out there was a bit of confusion, but in the end it was fine and once on the plane the purser just sat my son next to use in the 2X2 seating in an otherwise empty business class. On the way home today I was forced to buy a $750 D-fare ticket for my son to sit with us as he wasn't allowed to sit less than 1 meter behind me in the first row of coach seats. I was told I couldn't board and essentially held hostage to either flying coach, for which I just can't do. I'm 6'5" and even for a 4 hour flight it's unbearable or miss my flight. Any advice!? I had no idea this would be an issue when I booked tickets. My son just quietly sits and watches movies the whole flight anyway and couldn't care if he is 1 meter away in the next business seat or 1 meter behind me in the next coach seat. These are all small regional flights anyway. Any advice?
Yes. As stated, you should have either booked 3xJ or 3xY. That would have saved your problems. While it's unfortunate that US and CA are inconsistent in enforcing this rule of having a small child travel in the cabin with a guardian who is traveling on the plane, it is correct.
I doubt your dispute with the credit card company will work, as you were provided the ticket you bought, so it seems no fraud occurred, but that is of course your decision.
