Back in the day (mid 90s), an AA employee's spouse could be a member and could even purchase a spousal membership for the employee. Sometime later the policy changed to a spouse could join, but could not purchase a spousal membership. However, the spouse could guest the employee in when they were traveling together. As far as I know, that's the policy that is in place today. The exception to this is for officers of the company and other senior managers, they can be members, and in fact the company at one time provided memberships to officers (VP level and up). Managing Directors were allowed to buy memberships. Don't know if any of that has changed or not.....

The Amex Platinum card will not get you in the club as an employee per the terms and conditions of their lounge access program: "Employee travel-related benefit tickets are not eligible with American Airlines."

My time with American ended in 2004, so things could have evolved by now, but I doubt they have very much. Frankly, American was always a little hyper-retentive when it came to things like employees having access to customer benefits like lounge access. I don't ever see a day when they go the way of US or DL and let employees buy memberships....at least not as long as AA is the real AA.
