Overhead bin space is an issue industry-wide, but I can say that as someone who flies frequently on MD88s to FLL, I have never seen a delay due to overhead bin issues.
Wow... I must just be extraordinarily unlucky! Hopefully you'll never be so unfortunate as to end up on an MD-88 with me!
