Unhappy Success stories with the 2-for-1 International Airline Program for plat/cent?

Has anyone actually gotten a good deal with buying 2 international business or first class tickets for the price of one? A search of IAP found a couple of threads from 5 years ago at program launch and not a single post touted finding a good deal.

For example, I just called amex travel to inquire about business tickets from Boston to Paris departing in late May and returning three weeks later. The cheapest and most restricted fare was $4500 altogether for two tickets through Iceland Air with one layover, with the fully refundable version being between $9k and $10k. While on the phone, I did a parallel search on Kayak and found what is likely the exact same flight, for $2045. In other words, if I buy two business tickets for the same flight through Kayak, I'd be paying $4100, which is a $400 saving over amex's 2-for-1 "perk".

So, has anyone actually gotten a reasonable deal through the IAP? I'm not expecting to save 50% as the advertisement might lead you to believe, but I'm also not expecting to pay 10% more either. I understand those who need last minute tickets and fully refundable tickets might find some benefits with the IAP, but for (what I conjecture to be) most of us out there who will buy tickets more than a week in advance and have no reason to expect last minute cancellations, I think we'd pay for $4k nonrefundable through Kayak over $9-10k refundable through amex any day. Does the IAP offer any value really for most people out there?? Has anyone gotten actual savings through the IAP?
