I hike at 11-12K without problem. I generally feel winded around 12.5 and have been to 14K for shorter periods. Sea level to 12K seems rough. I'm hoping 24hrs has me feeling ok. Might take the preventative medicine but my wife has issues with sufides which I understand makes it impossible for her to take the altitude meds.
My understanding is I need to hire the guide for every day including arrival and departure in order to get the TTB. Is that incorrect?
1. Just stay hydrated and rest well you should be ok. No running around. Remember, there is no rules with altitude. Just because you've done ok in the past doesn't mean you'll be ok again. So take it easy.
2. You don't need a guide while you are in Lhasa, only when you are touring sites.

Since when? I was there Oct 2010 and we were able to negotiate. Things might have changed since then though.
