I don't know which routes you fly, but I've been on a bunch of IAH-AUS/SAT where there are easily 25-30 plats on the plane. Definitely enough for their own group. What should be done is that the GA can look at the manifest, realize that there are only 3 plats, and lump them in with 1K if it is appropriate. However, I don't have any problem with them announcing a boarding group and letting only three people on before calling the next round. It prevents things becoming the "now boarding all elites" scrum that was the hallmark of the last 8 months.
I do mostly LAX-SMF, SFO, ORD, DFW, IAD, BOS, PDX, SEA, DEN, IAH, CLE.
25-30 plats seems like a crazy huge bunch to me. I had to go do a little research and it surprised the heck out of me that CO flys a 737 on those in state routes, routes like that in California UA replaced with CRJs a long time ago and you are not going to get 25 Plats on a CRJ200 to Sacramento or San Jose or Fresno. There are not that many going to SFO hub to hub!
