I would choose AA as they will be able to interline the bags to QF as cornishsimon said.
Depending on the Qantas Flight it will either leave from T4 ( same as AA) or from the Tom Bradley Intl terminal ( you would normally have to leave T4, walk 2 mins to TBIT and reclear security but from 4pm there is a shuttle bus from T4 to TBIT for Qantas pax ( so you do not have to reclear security)
There is no bus IIRC from the United terminal ( 7-8) to TBIT.
