This topic is periodically raised in this and other forums. I am always puzzled by posters who make broad statements based on their "intuitions".
The facts are that many airlines are increasingly enforcing their commercial contract accepted by the customer and which states that all segments must be used and in the order purchased. Indeed, the airline will not take you to court, but they have other means. The most common way is when you buy the ticket from a TA, then the TA is assessed the price difference. Some airlines have been targetting the pax FFP.
Dear brunos, in case your statement about being "puzzled by posters who make broad statements based on their 'intuitions'" referred to me, I have done my research. There have been cases of customers taking airlines to court over airlines cancelling the return leg if customers failed to show up for the outbound leg (and German courts have ruled in passengers' favour, almost invariably), but I've yet to see an airline taking their customers to court for skipping the last segment of a booking. That airlines are using other means to enforce coupon sequence, like freezing passengers' ff accounts or targeting travel agents, is another issue.
