There is one more fact; as long as the booking allowed changes, BA would have allowed the poster to pay the fare difference and travel in 1st class or the poster could have purchased a 1st class ticket up front; both are ideal ways for BA to make revenue and would have allowed the OP to get out of CW

Why someone else received an upgrade is unknown and really is irrelevent ; it is nice that the OP is concerned about BA's profits but I would let BA worry about how to maintain their profits
