Creative use of a return leg on an award ticket?

My wife booked a roundtrip ticket from BOS-TPE using award miles and completed the first leg (BOS-TPE). Due to other circumstances, she didn't use the TPE-BOS return and I've been trying to see if I can get the return leg miles back (denied several times by customer service) or somehow use the return leg creatively so that it doesn't go to waste. If I had been smarter to start, I would've booked this ticket as two one-ways instead of a round-trip...

Any ideas on what would be some valid uses, other than having her take the TPE-BOS flight (we just had a newborn so there won't be many trans-Pacific flights anytime soon)? Some ideas I've been batting around:

- Name change so I could use it instead?
- Plead to split the round-trip ticket into two one-ways (although I have been denied this by customer service also), and cancel the return one-way?
- Use it for another routing, say for an intra-Asia flight?
- Beg to have the expiration date of the return leg extended, so we may be able to use it in the future?
