The original Blue Cash gives 5% on gas and groceries after a minimum annual spend (I think $6.5k?), and 1.5% before the minimum spend. But the minimum spend can be on anything - so if you time your anniversary date around birthdays/superbowl/holidays or something you can hit it with just a few big purchases. Also, no annual fee on the Blue Cash (vs. $75 on Preferred).
