A point needs to be made is that we sometimes expect too much from status.
I started reading
FD9171's comment with the same view as
edgewood49, but actually ended it in complete agreement.
PH Milan, Paris, Hamburg, are all very good hotels who should and do treat all guests very well. With Diamond yes you get a nicer room and a bottle of wine (well, not in Hamburg

) but the recognition is not 'order of magnitude' better than any other guest.
I agree with
FD1971, and I had an excellent experience with Hyatt for my one stay in Milan... but I think that I would have as a no-status guest.
The point is that the better the hotel, the less difference there is between how no-status guests and Diamonds are treated... actually, it seems like repeat custom is actually a more significant factor in treatment than status per se.
