The overnight train rests for 2 1/2 hours in the middle of the night in order to provide a better chance for passengers to sleep and to arrive at their destination at a civilised hour. It would apear that Via would rather not arrive early and simply let passengers remain on board until 8:00 a.m. (Montreal) or 8:20 (Toronto) because these trains carry commuters on the last part of their runs. Although only a few are carried into Montreal (from Cornwall and Coteau) a three-car commuter section is put on the Toronto-bound run at Kingston. I've made about a dozen one-way trips on this train since its restoration in Jan. 2000. Recently, the middle of the night "rest" on the eastbound train has been changed to Brockville; the westbound still pauses at Kingston. An overnight train makes much sense. It allows one to return from an evening function, for example, and also provides connections at Toronto to and from the transcontinental train and others. By the way, single use of the standard double room with advance purchase can be as low as $165, double occupancy about $130 per person.
