This is consistent with what happen on the one recent missed upgrade on a 6:30am Sat LAX-JFK. I hung around the gate until the bitter end because I was #1 on the list. Gate agent calls out on the mike, "Mr. Bowgie, please board NOW!" Obviously, she wanted to close out the boarding. I got the impression she would have yanked a diamond -- me or the other guy -- out of coach if there were an open seat.

(There was only one unsold first class seat when the list processed. The upgrade went to a diamond (I assume). Me and another diamond (He told me so.) sat in the back. First class went out full, so no complaints from me.
