Agree with prior poster.
If you have time to kill, check into a one-way rental from LGB to LAX.
Then you can see a lot more than you otherwise would.
BTW - I live in downtown Long Beach, a couple of blocks from the 1st St transit center - it's generally safe. I walk around all the time at night for dinner, etc.
