I suspect you are correct, and AA IT developed an algorithm that established Preferred Plus on the basis of what people selected when seats were openly available to all. And maybe they performed some other studies as well, but in the end, each individual will often express different preferences than an airline's institutionally chosen ones.

There are many times I look at a seat map and am puzzled by what is green vs purple. They don't match my preferences at all, but I am assumign AA based it on some kind of algorythm of what people used to snag first, back when people had free choice.
