On PMCO I purchased a tens of dollar upgrade. IIRC >3 hrs $39. After it took my money I saw I had an email that I had been upgraded. That email was actually in my inbox prior to my being offered (and accepting) the buy up.

I ended up with compensation worth a few hundred, so at least they handled it well when I complained. (I was happier with the voucher then a refund)
