In the early 1970s, AA flew to PPG, NAN, AKL and SYD. I believe that those routes were eventually traded/sold to PA for Caribbean routes.
IIRC, both AA and UA were pushing for Tokyo flights back in the 1960's, but the CAB gave AA those South Pacific flights, which they didn't really want, and gave UA basically nothing.
