If your PASSID number is present in your reservation with the airline, that information is encoded onto the boarding pass. When the TSA scans your boarding pass, you may be directed to the PreCheck lane if you're a member of the program. They can still send you through regular screening for any reason they see fit.
Yes, that's my point, it's not enough just to be a member of a GOES program. The carriers must pass along that info, which is then encoded into the barcode on the BP. When they scan your BP it will beep thrice and display "passenger name - LLL" and you go through precheck or you get the dreaded "name - CLR" and you go through the regular line. The carrier must have the information beforehand
