Both Earl's Court and South Kensington require stairs to change. So I would just go with the shortest way and change at Earl's Court.

Of course you could catch the Heathrow Express or Connect which goes to Paddington which is pretty close to Edgeware road.
Well, the easiest way is to cross the platform at Barons Court and then to cross it again at Earl's Court. It's three trains but doesn't involve getting your luggage up a whole bunch of stairs, just onto the platform and off to the other side of the same platform. (At Earl's Court it could potentially even be the same side, I think. Watch the indicator boards and make sure you get an Edgware Road train, not a Tower Hill or Upminster train.)

Don't be tempted to change to the Circle/Hammersmith & City at Hammersmith, by the way -- that's a separate station across the road from the District/Piccadilly station.

(Talking of a separate station across the road, there are two separate Edgware Road stations. The District, Circle and Hammersmith & City use the station south of the flyover, the Bakerloo uses the station north of the flyover.)
