While they (pilots) can not check their bags they can certainly put their hat in their lap. As for the briefcase will they even fit under a seat? If so they should of stowed there like the rest of the PAX should be doing with their second bag. However, in this day and age of the boarding/overhead scrum only a few are being that courteous.
