I've seen people who've missed their flight just out of sheer negligence by zoning out in the gate area even. I think I've seen people almost always (if not everytime) rebooked for free.

Now these days the problem is that the flights are very full, so your rebooking opportunities could be limited. So you may just want to light a fire under your smoker partner.
