Something that caught me by surprise at first is that you can only use one partner per redemption. That means you can't, for example, fly AA to LHR and then connect to BA on an AS award; you also can't fly AA on the outbound and BA (or DL) on the return. That can be restrictive. You can use AS to position yourself for the partner portion of an award ticket, but that's of limited use in NYC.
